Momo Kanjaki was just an innocent girl who was new to Domino High who, at first stayed to herself and wanted nothing to do with anyone. As days that turned into a month went by, Momo often found herself listening to Yugi and his friends' conversations and would laugh to herself at times. But, she'd still stay to herself and do her school work.As she kept to herself, Yugi and his friends all introduce themselves to her when they notice how she's always alone after being in their class for over a month. Momo senses that they are different and she's able to tell they're genuinely good people- allowing them into her "circle".Now hanging out with them, Momo found herself being more drawn to Ryou Bakura as they both have interests in the paranormal and the occult. Momo is drawn to Ryou because he stood out to her as well. Ryou found himself hanging out with Momo more, and the two slowly become closer from there.Momo didn’t know anything about the 3,000-year-old spirits residing in Yugi and Bakura's millennium items. She thought the millennium items were merely antiques at first until Bakura and Yugi were at odds with one another one day, which was unusual to Momo. So, the rest of the gang filled her in about the 3,000-year-old spirits that reside in the millennium puzzle and the millennium ring. And that's when she learned about Yami Bakura. Yami Bakura felt a sorge of familiarity when he first meets Momo through Ryou.It’s not discovered until later, when in a life-or-death situation, that Momo too has a 3,000-year-old spirit spirit named Ani Momo, who awakens from deep inside her soon after discovering Bakura’s millennium ring, which holds her lover and accomplice from a past life, Touzoku Bakura, from 3,000 years ago. Although the spirit, Ani, couldn't remember Touzoku, and the spirit Touzoku, couldn't remember Ani, they couldn't help but suspect who the other was.

*[Momo having a 3,000-year-old spirit reside in her is similar to Marik Ishtar’s Yami who doesn’t come from the millennium rod, but from within himself. It's also similar to how Kikyo's soul resided in Kagome's in Inuyasha and was set free later in the beginning of the series as Kagome is Kikyo's reincarnation.]
